History 

Pinetown officially became a town in 1948. It was named after the governor of KwaZulu-Natal at the time - Sir Benjamin Pine. The area grew successfully as an industrial hub. However, the burgeoning property developments and amenities turned Pinetown into a sought-after residential area, which it is known as to this day. There are many high-end suburbs in the main district of Pinetown and Padfield Park is one of the most popular choices. 

Climate

Pinetown generally enjoys a cooler climate than the majority of KwaZulu-Natal and Padfield Park is no different. Sunny days turn into misty evenings and summer highs of 28°C - 30°C are to be expected, while winter is usually between 18°C - 21°C. Distance from key points (Airport/CBD) 

The King Shaka International Airport is approximately 39 minutes (44,2 km) away via the N2 and the Durban CBD is 24 minutes (22,2 km) away via the N3. The Pinetown CBD is 14 minutes (7,4 km) away via Caversham Road. 

Education

There are many quality schools in surrounding areas for children of all ages to attend. Thomas More College is a co-ed school with classes from grade 000 to grade 12. They offer a Christian-based philosophy with a diverse teaching approach and relevant curriculum. Located on a stunning 41-acre eco-campus, is the Waterfall Pre-Primary School. They look after kids aged 12 months to grade 00 and offer a modern learning environment, cooked meals, an aftercare facility and holiday programme. 

St. Benedict School is a highly sought-after Catholic school with three phases for learners of all ages. The foundation phase focuses on classes beginning from Grades 00-3. The senior primary phase is from grades 4-7 and the high school phase is from grades 8-12. The school also offers sporting and extra-curricular activities for a well-rounded schooling experience.

Padfield Park has easy access to medical facilities and is ideally located in case of emergency or pharmaceutical assistance. St. Mary's Hospital can be found just off the N3 highway in Pinetown.  It has 200 beds and is a reliable referral hospital for nearby clinics and community health centres. The government hospital has a dedicated staff of doctors and nurses who go the extra mile to provide every patient with personal attention and care.

Shopping centres 

Padfield Park is close to the main shopping mall that services the Pinetown area which is Pine Crest Shopping Centre. The centre has provided the area with over 100 top-class retailers for over 30 years and offers shoppers free Wi-Fi and a discounted rate on parking when you shop at Pick n Pay, Woolworths or Game. Pine Crest also has a renovated food court where you can take a break between your retail therapy and have a bite to eat from one of your favourite takeaways. 

Pine Walk Centre is an outlet mall that houses 21 shops including a Post Net and Gastrek. The centre's anchor tenant is a SuperSpar, which caters to residents' primary grocery needs and a variety of banks.

The Curry O's is an Indian restaurant located in Pinetown with takeaway, dine-in and delivery options. The menu specialises in delicious Durban dishes such as bunny chows, biryani, butter chicken, veg curries, vermicelli and more. The restaurant has won many awards for its quality food and outstanding service and many locals comment on how the meals are consistently tasty, affordable and carefully prepared. 

Africaz Flame Grilled Chicken is one of those must-eat-at places you can't wait to try and get hooked once you do. Mochachos has been a firm favourite in the authentic Mexican fast food scene and become a household name in South Africa since it first opened its doors in Pretoria in 1994. The restaurant offers dishes like quesadillas, nachos, burritos, fajitas, shawarmas and a variety of fresh salads and kiddies meals. 

Special attractions 

Giba Gorge is an adventure park situated just on the outskirts of Pinetown and 21 minutes (12,2 km)  from Padfield Park via Henry Pennington Road/M1 and Ingweni Road. They offer a multitude of activities including mountain biking, bird watching, trail running, team building and more. There is also a nutritious restaurant at the trail centre called Giba Graze. The menu offers wholesome fare like gourmet sandwiches, freshly baked cakes, crunchy salads, full breakfasts and vegan options. Giba Gorge also hosts community events that range from dog days (where you can bring your pet along for a friendly 5 km run) to 10 km trail runs and night runs. The location also has a conference venue and hosts corporate events and birthday parties. 

Closer to home, the New Germany Nature Reserve is known to be a birdwatcher's dream and has a number of species and indigenous fauna and flora to identify. It is a great spot to see small animals and enjoy panoramic views. Make an afternoon of it and pack a light picnic to enjoy along the trails and prepare yourself and the kids for the live snake display! 

The Pinetown Cricket Club is the oldest club in KZN and is an important part of the community. Operating from Lahee Park, the club provides a warm, welcoming environment for members of all ages to enjoy coaching sessions that include batting, bowling and fielding. They often host cricket showcases for the public and is a great place to take the family and enjoy a friendly match while snacking on sandwiches and cheering on the players.
