Celebrate Heritage Day at Kathrada's Shisa Nyama
For many people in countries around the world, celebrating their heritage would probably revolve around honouring a single culture. But here in South Africa, we like to do things a little differently!
The story of Heritage Day is the story of each of us
Our country's unique history has forged a nation that is an amalgamation of many different backgrounds. The eleven official languages and a further 24 languages indigenous to South Africa is testament to the myriad peoples and cultures that all call South Africa home.
The history behind firing up the grill
In recognition of this rich tapestry of diversity, the powers that be inaugurated National Heritage Day on 24 September 1995 to encourage citizens to share their culture with each other. And we all know that South Africans never need much of an excuse to celebrate. The national holiday was adopted with enthusiasm across the country, and soon, it became a tradition to observe this special day in quintessential South African style - with good mates, tasty meat, metal tongs and, of course, a sizzling braai!
Now, after almost 30 years of celebrating Heritage Day, we've raised the practice of braaiing to an art form. This isn't just cooking - it's a cherished social phenomenon - and we all know the drill. Whatever your fuel - whether you light up briquettes or go old school with wood - the fire needs to be carefully tended by a crowd of socially inclined spectators and diligently monitored (and much discussed) until the temperature is just right. This, of course, takes hours and requires generous lubrication for the braai master and fellow bystanders. Speaking of braai masters, it is a well-established fact that there can be only one. The person who wields the tongs is in charge. No back seat braaiing allowed!
Kathrada's Butchery - helping you celebrate Heritage Day in style
Basic braaiing etiquette is just the start. Let's get to the meat of the matter - literally! No braai can be short of "inyama", and getting your stash from the right place is paramount. That's where gems like Kathrada's Butchery step up to help you on your way to Heritage Day heaven. Kathrada's bills itself as "the finest purveyor of premium quality meat", and its wide range of products and consumer-orientated shopping experience certainly back up this claim.
A new home around the corner
The butchery, which opened its doors in 2018, is currently located at 165 Josiah Gumede Road, but they are relocating from 1 October 2022 to new premises at 1 Devon Rd, Pinetown. They service the surrounding areas of Cowies Hill, Pinetown, Kwadabeka, Kloof and Hillcrest with a superb selection of lamb, chicken, beef and mutton. And as the only halaal butchery catering to these communities, it can accommodate a diverse range of cultures. Which is pretty much perfect for Heritage Day!
Convenience at its peak
Aside from its fantastic cuts of meat, Kathrada's stands out for its innovative, customer-friendly offerings. Not only are they open seven days a week (sjoe, that's your last-minute meat run sorted!), but they also boast supremely convenient online ordering with click-and-collect options as well as delivery for orders over R1000. Thanks to Kathrada's, getting your graze to your grill just got a lot easier.
They'll even lend you a hand when you can't cook it yourself with their "you buy, we braai" concept. All you have to do is select your braai pack - lamb, beef, chicken or mixed are available - and then the folks at Kathrada's braai it for you. Rock up when it's ready, and you're good to go with beautifully braaied meat in tow.
Enjoy a peaceful and relaxing Heritage Day weekend!
